Investigation of rotating bending fatigue strength of car axles and axle steels by National Engineering Laboratory, East Kilbride and Taylor Bros and Co, Ltd, Manchester, England, is described; basic and acid open-hearth steels were studied; tests of whole axles up to 150 mm in diam were made on electromagnetic resonance-type test rig developed for purpose, and their fatigue strengths were found to be of same order as those of 50 mm diam forgings; it was found that machining and polishing almost doubled fatigue strength.
