Alpha and Beta tramp vessels carrying 8000 tons d.w. on draft of 24-ft. summer freeboard; engines are triple-expansion surface-condensing type, with cylinders of 25, 42 and 70 in. diam. respectively and 48-in. stroke; reason for inquiry was considerably greater coal consumption of one vessel as compared with other.
