Trends in design of automobile engines at exhibition at Olympia; 6-cylinder engines being made in smaller sizes than hitherto but cubic capacity is generally greater than that of same maker's four-cylinder model; straight-eight engine now becoming commonplace; position as regards overhead and side-valves is more or less stationary; greater power in relation to size is being obtained by detail modification and combustion-chamber design, but attention is chiefly concentrated on obtaining high torque at medium speeds, so as to give rapid acceleration.
