Since 1879, trains between Oakland and Sacramento have been ferried across straits of Carquinez; proposed bridge to be double track, steel truss of seven fixed spans, each 531 ft. long, one lift span 328 ft. long and two end deck spans 566 ft. 6 in. and 266 ft. 6 in. long; total length of bridge is 5603 ft. 6 in.
