Variation of condition arises from varying gradients; attention is given to spacing of firebars; question of economy of using steam expansively by compounding; efforts to use steam in turbines on locomotives; attention has recently been given to employment of water-tube boilers of some type with greatly increased pressures; paper only deals with problems generally and not in detail.
