Consideration of longitudinal strength of ships; disposition of weight in ship has very important bearing on stress to which structure may be subject; advent of Diesel engine has drawn attention to necessity for providing sufficient local strength and stiffness under engine to resist stresses induced by concentration of weight and by vibration set up by this type of engine; outlines one or two of many problems which naval architect has to face.
