Experimental Route Guidance System (ERGS), which would direct driver of automobile to his destination by means of electronic equipment located inside vehicle and along roadside, is under development at Bureau of Public Roads; visual signals, in form of symbols, have been developed to convey directional information; to test potential benefits of system, three groups of drivers -- one using ERG system, another using road maps, and control groups -- drove over selected roadway network; heart rate samples and trip times were recorded.
