First of three cellular container ships for Manchester Liners Ltd was built by Smiths Dock Co Ltd; to enable winter navigation of ice-filled St. Lawrence these ships have been ice strengthened and have nearly double installed power required for vessels of this size; length oa 529 ft 9 in., length bp on 26-ft draft 498 ft, breadth molded 63 ft 6 in., depth molded to upper deck 48 ft, all seasons draft 27 ft 1-1/4 in., dw about 12,000 tons; two Crossley-Pielstick 18-cyl medium speed diesel engines develop 7670 bhp at 450 rpm; plan.
