Method of optimizing siderail sections designed to give deflection and strength parameters is presented and application and advantages of variable depth frames over conventional channel and channel reinforced rails are shown; factors involved in design, namely, engineering requirements, design detail, material, and siderail selection; design limitations of straight channel siderail which must have additional reinforcements to provide adequate structure for higher gross vehicle weight ratings and longer wheelbases; alternate side-rail configuration offering significant weight and cost reduction opportunities is use of variable depth channel side members.
