Revamping of northbound classification tracks at Potomac yard Alexandria, Va to speed switching operations and increase switching capacity and efficiency of yard; work is done while yard is in operation; three intermediate retarders are replaced with weight-responsive hydraulic type; notches cut in surface of rail produce vibrations from moving car wheels; vibration frequency is transmitted to control equipment that determines speed of car; velocity information is used to set position of retarder shoes along rail for controlling car speed.
