Outline of several economic methods applicable to ship design, pointing out that choice of criterion depends on such circumstances as whether revenues are predictable or not; methods for estimating weights and building costs for ships are suggested; problems of predicting annual transport capacity and operating costs, and approach to decision-making in ship design are discussed; sample studies are included and consider nuclear ship, economic design speed for ocean ore carrier, and comparison of innovations for Great Lakes ore carrier.
