Editorial review of paper read before Institute of Marine Engineers; in dealing with choice of propelling machinery, author made statement that majority of tankers are steam driven, although tendency is towards use of internal-combustion engine as means of propulsion; he questions wisdom of this tendency; but it is felt his advocacy of steam machinery for tanker tonnage is wrong; economics show that initially more costly Diesel plant is superior to steam, judged by trend of developments, for this class of tonnage.
