For energy saving purposes buildings are constructed increasingly airtight. Due to insufficient ventilation emissions from building materials and products might accumulate indoors. Not only emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) may cause impact on health and well-being of occupants but odours as well. Therefore, their perceived intensity can be assessed based on acetone as reference substance and the measurement procedure described in ISO 16000-28. Acetone is perceived mainly by the trigeminal nerve while other odours might be perceived primarily by the olfactory nerve. Thus, the comparison of the samples’ odour with acetone references poses a challenge for the odour assessors. One objective of the doctoral thesis at hand was to evaluate the standardised method for the assessment of the perceived intensity with comparative scale regarding the applicability under routine conditions. Moreover, additional reference odours should be identified, generated and characterised especially for integration into the assessors training. Thereby the comparability of odours shall be improved and subjective impacts and risk of systematic errors regarding the practical implementation of odour assessments shall be reduced even more. The applicability of standard ISO 16000-28 was checked in line with a pilot phase of the Committee for Health-related Evaluation of Building Products (AgBB) and the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) by conduction of two interlaboratory comparisons. Based on measuring results and intensive collaboration with testing institutes potential for improvement of the measurement method could be determined and findings could be contributed to the revision of ISO 16000-28. They included the technical implementation of comparison scales and codes of conduct for trained assessors and their group leader as well. Those recommen-dations may contribute to the improvement of this odour measurement method. To generate additional references with high accuracy and repeatability a robust system for their provision had to be developed. It was utilised to provide acetone, n-butanol, 2-butanone, ethyl acetate and 3-methyl-2-butanone. Successfully validated substance-air-mixtures were measured by trained assessors according to their perceived intensity in comparison to the standardised acetone references. For ethyl acetate and 3-methyl-2-butanone good correlations between concentration and perceived intensity were found up to 12 pi and beyond. Both substances do not irritate the trigeminal nerve in the chosen range of concentration and hence are particularly suitable as additional reference substances. The developed system for the provision of substance-air-mixtures is not only suitable for the generation of reference odours but also usable for the calibration of measurement devices. It might be particularly used to check for the correct adjustment of comparative scales.
