This study analyzes the impact of bus stops on adjacent non-motorized lanes and possible short-term influences on non-motorized traffic. Six bus stops in Nanjing are selected as study objects, and the traffic data is collected carefully. Then, characteristics of non-motorized traffic operations and conflicts are analyzed. The Greenshields model is used to fit the non-motorized vehicle volume and density. Finally, the impacts of different bus stop design on non-motorized traffic is discussed. Conclusions are as follows: (1) with the same width of non-motorized lanes, bus-stop bays have lower impact on the capacity of adjacent non-motorized lane than linear bus stops would have; (2) given the same type, bus stops with 2 entrances which are set at two ends of bus stops would have lower impact on adjacent non-motorized lanes; and (3) passengers entering or exiting bus stops would have short-term impacts on non-motorized traffic flow.
