With the development of urbanization and the increase of automobile ownership, the traffic becomes more and more congested. As a result, the traffic accidents arise and the environment aggravates. Traffic engineers over the world are trying their best to find solution to these questions. One effective measure is to build advanced urban traffic control system. Now there are three typical traffic signal control systems in the world. They are SCOOT, SCATS and TRANSYT. All of them use computers to coordinate the timing plan of intersections. In this paper, we first talk about operation mechanism of adaptive traffic control system. Then we discuss traffic prediction and signal-timing optimization in detail.
