British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. (BC Ferries) is an essential transportation link throughout the west coast of British Columbia, currently providing vehicle and passenger ferry service on 24 routes to 47 terminals, with a fleet of 33 vessels. About half of the vessels are considered minor/intermediate class vessels, with most varying in size, shape, freeboard, and mass. These variations create significant challenges for fleet interoperability. With aging vessels and terminal berth structures requiring phased replacement over a number of years, BC ferries was challenged to design a standardized berth ahead of the vessel replacement program, which would allow complete interoperability of the existing vessels and define the requirements for improved fits with the new vessels. Effectively, every minor/intermediate vessel was required to operate in every minor/intermediate berth, with some limitations accepted, until vessel replacement was completed. This paper discusses the initial and ongoing development of the “standardized berth concept” and covers areas such as the standardized berth requirement, vessel considerations, berth geometry, and features, ramp features, ramp to vessel interface considerations and constructability.
