We KOREA have used W-beam guardrails as main roadside safety barriers over 40 years. The key structures of W-beam guardrail are simple W-beam and rounded pole. The distance between poles was 4m and W-beam was bolted to the head of pole. But W-beam guardrails are weak to protect heavy vehicles like trailer or so. National criteria need them to resist and guide an errant vehicle weighted 14tons safely. In this paper, the results are contained about the full-scale vehicle crash tests on the present W-beam guardrails and modified guardrail. Through this study, we aimed at the improvement of stability and safety of the present W-beam guardrails.
