The road authority targets good ride quality in its pavement management. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is the most common way to describe road roughness, which is defined by means of quarter car model. For urban road with short section, complex traffic conditions, IRI calculated by a one-way vertical section is inappropriate to evaluate the pavement roughness. In this paper, IRI data detection by auto device was analyzed to make sure it is not influenced by the detection measure. The automatic device used to measure IRI in this paper has five laser probes. Detection position has significant impact on IRI data. IRI is processed to take in and consider the whole transection. Also proper road section length should be studied.
