Roughness of a road (or runway) is an important parameter which not only indicates the comfort level of ride over a pavement surface, but also is related to dynamic loads generated by heavy trucks. To evaluate the effects on ride comfort and dynamic tire load of pavement roughness accurately, a rider was included in a three-degree-freedom vibration model and a dynamic human-vehicle-road interaction analysis was carried out. The vertical weighted root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration of the rider and the dynamic impact factor of the tire were suggested to be pavement roughness indices. A pavement roughness evaluation method was developed accordingly. The two roughness indices were related to ride comfort and dynamic tire load directly. The ratings of ride comfort on four pavements were correspondent with the subjective ratings of ride comfort when these pavements were classified, but the international roughness index, the power spectral density and the standard deviation of pavement profile could not describe the ride comfort accurately under some conditions.
