To better simulate car-following behavior, this paper presents a new car-following model based on the OV model impacted by road gradients. The formulations are determined based on two different driving strategies including the aggressive strategy and the conservative strategy. A stability condition of the proposed model is obtained using the linear system theory. Through the statistical analysis on vehicle trajectory data collected in Guangzhou, it is shown that car-following behavior on the slope is different from those on the flat road. It is necessary to build car-following models considering gradient impacts. The proposed model shows its better performance compared with the OV model, implying that the proposed model is effective and able to capture the difference between gradient road driving and flat road driving.
