Conditions governing location of road; calculation of maximum gradients; grading and economy in transportation; economic comparison of layouts, based upon fuel consumption; increase in gradient to 4% or 6% preferable to curves which require application of brakes; in general, there is no necessity to shun gradients up to 6% on roads used exclusively or preponderantly for automobile traffic.
