In the near future, real traffic scenarios will be randomly mixed with adaptive cruise control (ACC) vehicles and manual vehicles, where fundamental diagram and driving comfort are studied under different ACC penetration rates. The car-following model validated by PATH program based on real experimental data is employed as the surrogate model for current commercial ACC vehicles, and the intelligent driver model is used as the manual driven model. Not only is the analytic fundamental diagram of the mixed traffic flow derived, but also the effect of ACC penetration on the scattered pattern of fundamental diagrams is investigated. Then, passenger comfort is measured using simulations, whose major cause is also discussed. Impacts of ACC and its desired time-gap on fundamental diagram and driving comfort are obtained, which can be as a reference for determining the value of ACC desired time-gap, under the consideration of a better balance between capacity and comfort.
