In the wake of recent events where vehicles have been turned into weapons of mass causality, our vision of urban landscape has changed forever. Urban public spaces are designed to be open and hospitable to encourage usage by crowds of people. However, these are the same reasons why such spaces are attractive soft targets to would be aggressors, and would require vehicular barriers. This article will discuss pre-engineered and engineered vehicular barriers, and how these systems can be integrated urban landscaping. Engineered systems will be highlighted specifically in light of analytical modeling advancements. Challenges associated with vehicular barrier systems in urban areas will be highlighted. Engineered and pre-engineered systems will be discussed. In addition to pedestrian and traffic flow requirements, underground conditions and aesthetic requirements are among the main drivers for barrier selection.
