The adjustment of train diagram is becoming more and more frequent with the change of passenger flow under the condition of network-operation of urban rail transit (URT). The manual crew pairing method is difficult to meet the needs of operation currently. In response to this situation, an optimization model for urban rail transit crew pairing problem based on workload equilibrium is established in this paper. The model is based on datum of train diagram. Then, an improved heuristic algorithm is designed to solve this model. Lagrangian relaxation technique and column generation algorithm are adopted to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is given using data from Line 4 of Chengdu Metro. Results show that the new algorithm can get the optimal crew pairing plan in a short time and can satisfy the workload equilibrium among duties to a certain extent.
