In the process of road traffic safety management, it is necessary to develop research on road traffic safety status in order to be aware of the traffic safety situations and trends, and aim to take corresponding measures of improving road traffic conditions and decreasing the risk of traffic accidents. In this paper, some issues of evaluation index selection had been explored. From the aspects of human, vehicles, roads, and the environment, the influencing factors of traffic safety status had been deeply analyzed. Subjective and objective analysis methods had been combined to determine weight assignment of the evaluation indexes, and the evaluation index system had been established. The road traffic safety status evaluation model based on matter element extension method had been developed, and the validity of this model had been verified by the results of case study. It is helpful to expand the application scope of road traffic safety status evaluation methods with applying of the study results of this paper.
