The purpose of the Central Artery/Tunnel project in Boston is to replace the elevated central highway system with an underground expressway with increased traffic capacity. A major element of the project is the rebuilding of the interchange for Interstate Routes I-90 and I-93, and includes the extension of the existing I-90 under the track system leading to South Station. Large scale soil freezing is used as a safe and reliable means of soil stabilization for the installation of 3 jacked tunnels under the rail tracks. This paper will discuss design aspects of the soil freezing, installation of the freeze system, soil behavior during the freezing and excavation aspects.
