A train moving at high speed in an open area induces the formation of pressure distribution around itself which moves with the speeding train, and the pressure variation increases in magnitude as train speed increases. The design of high speed railway projects demands models to predict pressure variations to minimize environmental impact. A simple fluid dynamic model is conceived, numerical calculations using the boundary element method evaluate the effect of a real train configuration on pressure during train passage. Comparison of the numerical results to field tests confirms simulation validity with qualitative agreement. The effect of a wall installed along the side of the railway as a countermeasure to reduce pressure variation is analyzed. The reduction effect increases with wall height, a 5 m wall will reduce amplitudes to about one half. For 270 km/h trains like Nozomi of Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen to be operated at maximum speed of 300 km/h the understanding of aerodynamic phenomena at high velocity such as pressure variation and train wind is important.
