As part of the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) truck pavement interaction research programme on trucks sizes and weights, a review of the work devoted to the study of heavy vehicles and road interaction is presented in this paper. In particular, this review focuses on answering one of the most pressing questions in the area of heavy vehicle-generated road damage and deals with the spatial repeatability of dynamic wheel loads produced by heavy road vehicles for different type of suspension systems. The outcome of this review will play a determining role in assessing heavy trucks suspension systems and their contribution to pavement damage along with defining 'road-friendly' subsystems.
