In order to improve the high energy conservation potential of vehicles powered by hybrid drive lines equipped with CVT's, while maintaining high levels of driveability and comfort, electronic drive line control is imperative. The transmission ratio of the CVT and its derivative with respect to time are essential quantities for such control. It is shown that electric signals corresponding to these quantities can be obtained with high accuracy and the time delay occurring in the rate of change is well within the requirements for on-line use in a control system. Without precaution, torsional vibrations in the drive line inhibit the accurate determination of the transmission ratio and its rate of change. It is shown how by proper selection of data acquisition and processing techniques this problem can be eliminated. Experimental verification has been carried out on a drive line test rig.
