Recent economic activities, such as the offshore exploration and production of natural oil and gas in the North Sea, require high performance structures. However, due to the high strength nature of the materials and the hostile environmental conditions, the structural components are susceptible to local fatigue and cracking damages which in turn affect the overall integrity of the structures. In order to assess the structural integrity, fatigue and fracture mechanics analyses are required. Due to the many uncertainties involved in the parameters, the results of the analyses are also subject to uncertainties. The overall effect can be analysed with reliability techniques. This paper reports the recent development of reliability fatigue and fracture mechanics analyses for offshore structural components. The technique is closely related to the limit state theory. This new development therefore enables a unified approach to the design and maintenance of structural integrity. Other aspects of maintenance consideration such as non-destructive inspection reliability will also be discussed.
