The integrity of the structural components in offshore applications, such as welded tubular joints, is important to the safe operation of the offshore platforms. Due to the large number of wave induced loading cycles, the long term integrity of these components is likely to be reduced by fatigue damage. The offshore platform operators are carrying out frequent and costly inspections on the structures to ensure integrity and safety. Furthermore, research has been supported by the Offshore Industry and the British Government to study the fatigue behaviour and the reliability of underwater inspection of these structures. As a consequence, there has been significant progress in the understanding of the fatigue risk and reliability of the maintenance strategies of tubular joints. This paper will review the recent progress in the assessment and maintenance strategies of tubular offshore structures against fatigue. The inspection methods commonly used offshore will also be described. Emphasis, however, will be put on the implications of the combined research findings on the effective uses of inspection and maintenance actions.
