Results are reported of Dofasco's undervehicle coupon exposure tests. The corrosion resistance of both unpainted and primed coupons is compared for various coated steels currently used by vehicle manufacturers. Commercial vehicles, driven on Southern Ontario roads, subjected to deicing salts, were used. Results of these tests indicated that hot dip galvanneal steel at 70 g/m2 per side was superior to either hot dip galvanized or electrogalvanized steel at 110 g/m2 coating weight per side in corrosion protection of the steel substrate. No difference in performance was found between hot dip galvanneal and electro zinc-iron coated steel at 40 g/m2 side. Various electrogalvanized steels provided similar corrosion resistance in the unpainted condition despite differences in plating bath and surface profile.
