With the use of replica road surfaces on drums, real time analysis facilities, and spectral arithmetic capability, it is possible to analyse the relative importance of the different directions of excitation of each body suspension point in contributing to internal vehicle tyre/road noise. This is a useful aid in the reduction of such noise. With regard to tyre properties, in the case of two or more tyres running on a vehicle, an average of the beat cycles should be obtained to get representative noise spectral information. Concerning the pair of air resonances in tyres, the frequencies may be calculated simply from published data and coincidence with other resonances should be avoided.
