For some time, the authors of this article, have been interested in finding a modeling framework that links combat outcomes and command and control C2 in a rigorous manner. They believe that this can be provided by considering catastrophe theory, the mathematical study of catastrophes. Catastrophe theory is a relatively new mathematical discipline dealing with sudden changes. The theory was developed in the late 1960s by the eminent mathematician Rene Thom, who already had received the Fields medal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel prize, for other work. Thom called sudden changes 'catastrophes' and developed a theory (subsequently called catastrophe theory by Christopher Zeeman) to analyze and classify this type of behavior.
