The uninterrupted transportation of gas to the customer throughout the pipeline's working life, which is the main goal of pipeline designers and operators, largely depends on the correct implementation of the designs during construction. The requirements on the pipe - in particular, on the metal employed, the weld joints made at the plant, and the geometric parameters - must guarantee satisfactory carrying capacity of the pipeline after transportation, welding, and assembly of the components. In this paper, these requirements are discussed in detail based on a comparison of the international standards GOST 20295-85, API 5L and ISO 3183. The results show that the technical specifications currently imposed on pipe for high-pressure long-distance gas pipelines will basically ensure reliable pipeline operation in the near future. However, the following issues require resolution or constant attention: 1) a more profound understanding of methodological resources - in particular, regarding the determination of the metal's crack resistance as a function of the temperature - is needed. 2) The search for means of assessing the resistance of the metal to stress-corrosion cracking must be continued. 3) The expedient assessment of the structure of fine-grain ferrite-bainite steel on the basis of images requires further study, as does the selection of formulas for calculating the carbon equivalent in steel with <0.12% C. 4) Careful analysis of outdoor pneumatic test data for high-strength pipe is required. 5) The introduction of pipe of strength classes X100-X120 is promising. 6) Highly deformable pipe steel that is able to remain stable during intense seismic activity (earthquakes or tectonic shifts in the Far Eastern region), must be developed. 7) Means of maintaining the performance of pipelines in deep underwater locations where there is a risk of cascade collapse on account of the elevated external pressure, must be found.
