This paper presents a systematic assessment of the noise emission from three different types of commercial in-service vehicles, ranging from passenger saloon cars, public light buses to goods vehicles. The study evaluates the noise emission characteristics of these vehicle types and their degradation in noise performance, in terms of the increase in decibels per vehicle mileage travelled. Effort has been made to select vehicles of the same manufacture and model for each vehicle type to eliminate the effects of such on the test results. The choice of two batches of diesel goods vehicles with the same manufacture, series and permitted gross vehicle weight but different engine capacities also enables the effects of such on the noise emission characteristics to be evaluated. Noise measurements for the stationary, accelerating, steady running tests following the relevant ISO standards and Japanese testing protocols were conducted and their noise emission characteristics evaluated. The compressed air noise levels of the goods vehicles following the testing protocol in the relevant EEC Directive are also presented.
