Unconventional rail truck models are considered to improve the tradeoff existing in the conventional rail vehicle design between the stability and curving performance. The primary stiffness parameters are optimized for each design and their performance compared in terms of off-flange curving/stability tradeoff and angle of attack and flange wear index. The unsymmetric wheelset truck which is a radial truck having independently rotating wheels (IRW) in the trailing axle possesses better compatiblity between the stability and curving performance compared to other truck models. The curves considered are those found on main lines, that is up to 250 m. The trade-off performance of the truck provided with unsymmetric suspension is worse than the radial truck. This may be due to the fact that the influence of unsymmetric suspension has a deteriorating effect on the truck's stability performance which offsets any possible improvement in the curving behaviour. The new design of rail truck with independently rotating wheelset in the trailing axle has the potential for reducing wheel-rail wear and achieves an overall superior performance compared to other optimized truck models. However, in order that the truck be bi-directional, the wheelsets have to be provided with electromagnetic clutches.
