Description of a 2 1/2 year project to investigate both short and long term effects that extreme marine residual fuel qualities could have on shipboard handling, preparation and engine performance. The investigations were carried out on a 44800 T deadweight 'LASH' vessel, powered by a Sulzer 9RND90 two-stroke crosshead diesel engine. The presentation is divided into seven sections: Introduction; Concept and scope of project; Realization; Selected fuels investigated; Fuel handling, preparation - results and comments; Engine performance; Conclusions.
