A theoretical comparison of man powered flight in air and hydrofoil supported 'flight' over water suggested that the latter would be easier to achieve than the former. A full-size experiment was carried out, using a standard aluminium sculling boat and 'left over' hydrofoil sections from sailing hydrofoil projects. A canard configuration, with no moving parts, proved suitable. Technical success was achieved at first attempt, but lack of time and resources have prevented further development towards a 'race-winning' version when competing against conventional craft. Problems compared with that required on theoretical grounds. (Wassmann)
