This paper describes fundamental concepts pertinent to designing an optimum Linear Synchronous Motor as the propulsion system for High Speed Ground Transportation. The complicated interactions between the key parameters are systematically arranged so show what is essential to determine these parameters. Some important guideposts to determine these parameters are obtained. Also, a control method for economical Linear Synchronous Motor operation is discussed.
