Autonomous vehicles with mature technology can improve the safety and accessibility of vehicle transportation and reshape their mobility based on improved operating efficiency and convenience. Key tasks for autonomous vehicle safety should be (1) strong execution through dynamic planning of motion and (2) shared environment with other vehicles and pedestrians through feedback control. The purpose of this chapter is to present the state-of-the-art planning and control algorithms, especially for urban environments, and discuss their effectiveness. The discussion of planning control in this chapter provides insight into the strengths and limitations of various approaches and helps in choosing a system-level design.
