The rate of deterioration of visibility during bad weather conditions in Northwest Europe is such that little improvement in overall regularity of operation can be expected until aircraft are able to land blind. With present methods of approach and landing, however, the risk of an accident increases many times over as weather limits are lowered. British European Airways, therefore, takes the view that the system selected to improve regularity must also contribute significantly to an increase in the level of safety, in good weather as well as in bad. It is also their view that the attainment of these two objectives is possible at this time only through the use of a fully automatic system capable of surviving a single major failure. A stage-by-stage program to implement this policy in the Trident is planned to extend over a 4-5 year period in which weather minima will be progressively reduced to virtually “zero-zero.”
