    Titel :

Combating rolling noise of trains by means of rail grinding - The main source of noise in rail traffic is rolling noise, the level of which is dependent on the travelling speed of the passing trains and the surface condition of both rail and wheel. It is, therefore, of great importance to achieve a high surface quality of both rail and wheel. A smooth rail surface can be achieved by means of grinding, whereby a distinction is made between grinding for maintenance purposes and that for noise control purposes. In order to cause less damage to the wheel surface, it is the intention of various railways to replace the cast-iron block brakes on their freight trains with those featuring K-composite bases.
