Naval Station Norfolk (NSN) is the largest naval base in the United States. Its mission is to provide fleet support and readiness for the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The base is comprised of the two installations previously known as Naval Air Station Norfolk and Naval Station Norfolk, both established in 1917. NSN is located on 4,631 acres on the Sewells Point peninsula in northern Norfolk, Virginia. Willoughby Bay is to the north and the Elizabeth River is to the west. Mason Creek forms a portion of NSN's eastern border. Residential, commercial, and industrial areas are to the east and south, as well as being inset into the southwestern portion of the base. This part of Norfolk, which includes the Glenwood Park community, is surrounded by the base on three sides and the Elizabeth River to the west. NSN is fenced, and public access is not allowed. Activities conducted at NSN include defueling, refueling, painting, paint stripping, equipment cleaning, engine maintenance, sandblasting, metal plating, and loading and unloading of products used aboard vessels. In 1983, efforts began to identify site-related contamination resulting from the handling and disposal of products used at the base.
