The project consists of improvement and the addition of naval ship berthing spaces at the Naval Station, Norfolk. Work includes a total of 1,850,000 cubic yards of dredging at various piers along the Naval Station waterfront, and the construction of additional piers. Dredge spoil will be disposed of in the Craney Island spoil disposal site. The proposed action will enable the berthing of some ships now anchored in the Norfolk Port area. Berthing will also allow ships to shut down boilers, thus reducing air pollution and within ship fuel transfers which may result in accidental oil spills. Adverse environmental effects are associated only with the dredging.
