The general lack of attention given to handling large and heavy weights from oceanographic ships in a sea way has been pointed out with the advent of small submersibles. With the acquisition and operation of the deep submergence research submarine ALVIN at Woods Hole, this lack of a successful system has become an acute problem. The funding for design and construction of a new research ship (AGOR-15), to be furnished to Woods Hole by the Navy, has provided the opportunity to survey the state of the art and to develop an improved system for handling ALVIN. A review of the various systems used in handling existing submersibles is given, and the detail performance specifications are given. The requirements for the system include constant tension pick-up and launching, automatic hook-up and release, and control of the motion and swing of the submersible during the hoisting operation. The design and engineering methods being used to produce this system which is now under construction, are given in detail. (Author)
