The prediction is made that Autonomous Robot Submersibles (ARS) will be in widespread use within ten years and is supported by economic, social and technological factors. The task domain for ARSs is divided into three classes according to the demands of the tasks. Three corresponding ARS configurations are formulated to meet these demands. Then the present limitations to ARS technology are discussed. Autonomous Robot Submersibles (ARS) are unmanned submersibles which are able to perform all of the information processing and storage functions necessary to accomplish a specified mission completely without assistance from external sources. No decisions or control information are communicated to the ARS by an entity with more able information processing capabilities. ARSs must therefore gather all of the information that they need from a task at hand, evaluate this information relative to a prespecified goal structure and make the changes required to the task to achieve the desired conditions completely with onboard resources. A few ARSs have been constructed in the past but most of these devices are experimental in nature.
