A disc brake caliper body with opposing pistons has piston bore end face centers on an eclipse 56 sized to coincide with lengthwise extremities of a disc opening envelope, the eclipse foci 58 being within the disc envelope, and a mounting hole 46 intersecting, touching or tangential to the eclipse. A running clearance between the pads and disc is maintained by a large groove radius (55, fig 5) for the piston seal causing the pistons to retract fully. The body can be asymmetric (e.g. with different bore diameters); have a bridge (28, fig 8) spanning the opening; be monobloc; used in a brake-by-wire system; and a design method is described (fig 9) which minimises mass & maximises strength rather than stiffness allowing higher deflections.
