The invention relates to a method for operating a driver assistance system for automatically guiding a motor vehicle, having the following steps: - detecting surroundings data relating to the surroundings of the motor vehicle by means of surroundings sensors of the motor vehicle and ego data relating to the motor vehicle, - determining multiple trajectories, each of which describes a possible future movement of the motor vehicle, depending on the surroundings data and ego data, - selecting a target trajectory from the determined trajectories by analyzing multiple evaluation criteria, at least one of the evaluation criteria being a detection region criterion, which evaluates at least one predicted detection region of one of the surroundings sensors or a group of the surroundings sensors of the motor vehicle during a predicted movement of the motor vehicle along the respective determined trajectory, and - actuating vehicle systems in order to move the motor vehicle along the target trajectory.
