The invention relates to the field of vehicles, in particular to a method for vehicle distance measurement, which comprises the following steps of: S1, detecting a license plate of a target vehicle by a sensor of a vehicle; s2, identifying license plate information based on the detected license plate image and obtaining the size of the license plate; s3, correcting license plate imaging in the sensor coordinate system; s4, calculating the distance between the sensor and the license plate in the sensor coordinate system; s5, converting the sensor coordinate system into a vehicle coordinate system; s6, modeling the license plate position of the target vehicle under the condition of the vehicle coordinate system; and S7, obtaining the distance between the vehicle and the target vehicle based on the license plate model. The invention also relates to a system for ranging a vehicle, a corresponding vehicle and a computer program product. According to the invention, reliable vehicle distance measurement can be achieved by means of indirect measurement using existing devices. In this way, a simple redundancy scheme for vehicle distance measurement can be achieved, and therefore the safety of vehicle driving can still be ensured under the condition that the vehicle distance measurement device fails.
